The Great Australian Breakfast

The Australian Breakfast, is an annual event attended by the residents of Lincoln in celebration of our city’s twinning with Port Lincoln in Australia.

Lincoln and Port Lincoln have been twinned since 1991, following the visit of the then Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor David Jackson. Port Lincoln is situated at the tip of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It was discovered by Captain Matthew Flinders who set sail to Australia from his native Lincolnshire in 1802.

The Australian Breakfast coincides with Australia Day, January 26, when townsfolk in Port Lincoln take to the beach to light their barbeques, open a ‘tinny’ or two and have a party. Great fun is had by all and, in the best British tradition, Councillor Jackson thought it would be a great way to liven up wintry January days for the people of Lincoln back home.

The first Breakfast was in January 1992 and since then it has always received much support from local residents. It is a great chance for the people of Lincoln to celebrate the twinning with Port Lincoln while tucking into a traditional English breakfast, listening to local bands and having a go at winning some great prizes on the raffle. It is also a chance to meet, and be waited on by Civic dignitaries. The Civic Party and Lincoln’s MP Gillian Merron serve the breakfasts and clear tables.
